So very honored to have this endorsement from Teachers For Choice! They have been on the forefront for medical freedom for teachers and students, and fearlessly push back against harmful agendas that do not serve the best interests of our kids.
I left the DOE right before Covid hit to become an education professor. During Covid, I supported my student educators to “build the plane while flying.” You can’t imagine the fear, stress, and heartbreak our teachers encountered, especially our brand new educators. What got us through was embracing empathy and building strong student teacher relationships to best support our kids and try to mitigate the damages of those unprecedented times.
I felt helpless as a civil rights attorney when many of my students faced a Hobson’s Choice of getting the jab or getting fired. Whether for religious reasons or health concerns, it doesn’t matter. Where was #MyBodyMyChoice when workers’ fundamental right to bodily integrity was violated? I wanted to help but realized with the state of national emergency and all the executive orders, it was futile.
I had my own issues with this mandate as well. In no way am I “anti-vax” but I had serious questions about the safety and efficacy of this experimental vaccine. I was not refusing to take it per se, but I wanted to wait to see what would happen. People all around me were fear mongering, and had lost their critical thinking skills by rabidly parroting the fake news media talking points. Anyone daring to question the official narrative was attacked, mocked, harassed, shunned, and cancelled.
Then it came down to the wire. I faced my own dilemma of taking the shot or losing my job and my place in the doctorate program, which were both ONLINE. This made absolutely no logical sense but it was like shouting into the wind. I was forced into doing something against my own free will and that is unforgivable to the people who made these decisions against us.
Thankfully the booster requirement was lifted just before my deadline to comply. By that time, I had my doctorate degree and I was going to stand my ground and let them fire me from my remote job. Even being vaxed, the relentless pressure to get more boosters was difficult to withstand. I applaud everyone who went through this without bending the knee, who lost everything, and who still have not found justice. ⚖️
